Home to one of the most beautiful beachfronts in the state, Siesta Key is well known for being a travel destination. Whether it’s for a day or a week, this small patch of paradise draws thousands of visitors each and every year. Though part of it is in Sarasota city limits, it is considered to be its own designated place. It was originally named "Sarasota Key" by European cartographers in 1513. That name can be seen on maps from the early 18th century, as well as on all local maps before the 1920s when the name changed to "Siesta Key."
