City of Avon Park, Florida

Avon Park is the oldest city in Highlands County. It is named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Oliver Martin Crosby, a Connecticut native who moved to the area to study the wildlife of the Everglades, was the first permanent settler. By 1886, enough people had followed that the town of "Lake Forest" was founded, and many of the settlers came from Stratford-upon-Avon, so the name was eventually changed it its current state.
