Fort Caroline The Timucuan Preserve

Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve is a 46,000 acre federally protected National Park that includes coastal wetlands, salt marshes, white sandy beaches, coastal dunes and hardwood hammocks.

Established in 1988, this wildlife refuge is home to several endangered species and provides a safe habitat for numerous plants and animals. The preserve is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and offers visitors the chance to experience natural beauty, historical sites and outdoor activities. The area is known for its diverse ecosystems which include maritime forests, salt marshes, barrier islands and estuaries. Visitors can explore trails by foot or bike, canoe along the river, go fishing or bird watching or take part in educational programs such as guided walks and talks. There are also plenty of opportunities for picnicking, camping and wildlife viewing.

The preserve also includes Fort Caroline National Memorial, Kingsley Plantation and Theodore Roosevelt Area. These sites provide visitors with a unique opportunity to learn more about the history of Florida and the people who have lived here. The preserve also includes archaeological sites which provide insight into ancient cultures and environments.

In 2020, the preserve was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in recognition of its efforts to protect and restore the area’s natural resources. There are 2 campgrounds within the preserve and lots of places to stay outside the preserve in the Jacksonville Metro area.
