There are 3 types of eye doctors: optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists.

Optometrists provide primary vision care with services ranging from eyesight testing and vision services. Optometrists are trained in optometry school for 4 years postgraduate to obtain a doctorate in optometry. Optometrists can perform eye exams, visual tests, and some surgical procedures, and prescribe corrective lenses and medication for eye conditions.

Opticians are technicians trained to design and fit visual aids such as eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses and other devices to correct a person's eyesight.  Opticians do not have the necessary training to diagnose eyesight problems, and they cannot treat eye conditions. They use prescriptions from an optometrist or ophthalmologist to fit the eyeglasses and visual aids.

Ophthalmologists are eye doctors who are licensed to practice medicine and surgery with a minimum of 8 years medical school training. Ophthalmologists can perform the same services as an optometrists and can also diagnose and treat all eye conditions and perform eye surgeries. Ophthalmologists may choose a specialty such as cornea, retina, glaucoma, neurology, pediatric, and plastic surgery relating to the eye and eye area.
